What is asset allocation? Do not keep all your eggs in one basket

Asset allocation means dividing your money between equity, debt, gold and cash. See how it softens falls with easy examples and simple maths.

Asset allocation sounds big. The idea is old and simple: do not put all your eggs in one basket.

Asset allocation is how you split your money between different kinds of investments.

The main baskets

  • Equity: shares of companies. Can grow more over long periods, but the value moves up and down a lot.
  • Debt: money lent to the government, banks or companies for interest. Usually steadier, with smaller moves.
  • Gold: some people keep a small part for balance.
  • Cash: savings account or similar. Safe and easy to reach, but grows slowly.

Each basket behaves differently. When one is down, another may hold up. That is the whole point.

An example: when markets fall

Say you have ₹10 lakh. Imagine a bad year where equity falls 30% and debt stays flat. This is an example, not a forecast.

Your split Equity Debt After the fall Loss
All equity ₹10 lakh ₹0 ₹7 lakh 30%
60% equity, 40% debt ₹6 lakh → ₹4.2 lakh ₹4 lakh ₹8.2 lakh 18%
30% equity, 70% debt ₹3 lakh → ₹2.1 lakh ₹7 lakh ₹9.1 lakh 9%

More debt means a smaller fall. But more debt also means less chance of growth in good years. There is no free lunch. You are choosing a comfort level.

How do people choose a split?

Two things matter most.

  1. Time to the goal. The nearer the goal, the less risk you can take. A fee due in 2 years needs steadier money than a retirement 25 years away. See how risk works.
  2. Your own comfort. Ask: "If this fell by a fifth, could I stay calm and wait?"

Some people use a rough rule such as "100 minus your age is the share for equity". For a 30-year-old that is 70%. It is only a starting thought, not a rule for everyone.

Goal Years away Idea people often think about
Car down payment 2 Mostly debt and cash
Child's education 10 A mix
Retirement 25 More equity, with care

Rebalancing: keeping your split on track

Over time, the baskets grow at different speeds, and your split drifts. Fixing it is called rebalancing.

Example: you start with ₹10 lakh at 60:40 (equity:debt). After a good year, equity is ₹8 lakh and debt is about ₹4 lakh. Total: ₹12 lakh.

  • Equity share now: 8 ÷ 12 = 67%, higher than your plan of 60%.
  • Target equity for 60%: 12 lakh × 0.6 = ₹7.2 lakh.
  • Move about ₹0.8 lakh from equity to debt.

You sell a bit of what has risen and add to what has lagged. It keeps your risk where you wanted it. Many people check once a year.

Mutual funds make it easy

You do not need to pick shares or bonds yourself. Equity funds, debt funds and mixed funds each cover a basket. Read next: types of equity and debt funds.

Keep an emergency fund in a safe place first, so a sudden bill never forces you to sell at a bad time.

What to remember

  1. Asset allocation = how you split money between equity, debt, gold and cash.
  2. A mix softens falls, and also softens gains.
  3. Match the split to your goal's date and your comfort, and rebalance about once a year.
